Mary and Pauline, Ernest’s second wife, in San Francisco in November 1947. Pauline showed Mary a swell time, according to Patrick Hemingway, Pauline’s son, who was also present for the visit. Mary and Pauline developed a close friendship as graduates of the same alma mater—marriage to Ernest.
