Ernest was sometimes brutal and abusive to Mary, but she made him pay. Mary threatened to leave Ernest many times, but he always apologized for his misconduct, promised to reform, bought her minks, jewelry, a yellow convertible, and gave her cash to compensate for his bullying. Mary chose to stay with him because she loved their life together–most of the time. She was also pragmatic and realized her standard of living would drop if she had to survive on reporter’s wages.
